Theory of Gendered Institutions

Most relevant for gender mainstreaming specialists, Joan Acker’s theory of gendered institutions is an important concept to understand. Many of the institutional assessments of gender mainstreaming stem from Acker’s theory and can be contextualized for the use of international development organizations to reduce barriers specific to the areas where your organization operates. Additionally, it has been expanded upon to provide a wider understanding of barriers to workforce diversity through the application of ideal worker narratives. The resources on this page can provide an in-depth understanding of the theory.
